Also known as tooth colored fillings, composite fillings are made out of glass and resin that match the natural color of tooth enamel. Composite resin is a material favored by dentists in tooth fillings and for repairing defects in the teeth. Although composite fillings tend to be a little more expensive than amalgam (silver) fillings, the obvious advantage is that it is difficult to distinguish composite from natural teeth. This is one of the main reasons why many people opt to replace their silver amalgam fillings with white fillings. Additionally, unlike silver amalgam fillings, composite fillings are free from mercury. Composites are often used on the front teeth where a natural appearance is important, but can be used on back teeth as well. A composite filling restoration can be completed in just one visit. As compared to other restorations, less healthy tooth enamel is required to be removed to make space for the filling.
